In a brisk twenty knot northeaster off Highlands New Jersey the Reliance beat the Shamrock to the line at 11 45 50 am and pulled steadily away. Captain Barr steered the American yacht to outpace the English challenger as wind slackened and mist fell threatening a finish before the time limit.
Company M members Major Courtney Captain Smith Lieutenant Roloff and Private Shaw returned from Springfield life range with honors for the twin cities. Captain Smith earned the distinguished Sharpshooter's medal, one of only two Fourth regiment members to do so. Major Courtney Roloff and Shaw earned sharp shooter’s medals. Company M led the regiment in medals and may be chosen for national maneuvers at West Point in October.
Homer residents circulate a subscription paper to raise funds for an interurban electric line from Ogden to Homer. The community favors the McKinley syndicate’s construction and aims to raise about 3000 dollars with little difficulty.
George W. Davidson sells his parcel at 706 West Park Street to 8A Hossack. Davidson plans to begin construction of a house on Davidson Place on West Street.
In Danville on August 31 the jury convicted all defendants except 16 year old Clay Biddle and William Redwine. Redwine testified his leg wound came from bricks, not a shot, and the next trial includes 22 defendants with 8 attorneys.
Harry Keevil killed Annie Schner, a servant girl, then shot himself this morning. Keevil, son of a wealthy hatter, and Annie had secretly married a month earlier. The morgue laid both bodies beside each other as authorities learn of the hidden marriage and unclear motive.
William Jennings Bryan departs for Ohio campaign, dispelling rumors of canceled dates. He confirms only Toledo scheduled for cancellation due to travel timing, while Lincoln remains on and Laredo was not mentioned.
The bar docket for the September term lists 83 common law and 138 chancery cases in this county. Chancery figures include 45 divorce actions naming multiple pairs such as Rosa B. Kenner versus Henry Kenner and Hannah M. Johnson versus Geo M. Johnson along with numerous other spouses and bidders in divorces.

The trial of twelve indicted North Jersey Railway officials for manslaughter over a collision that killed nine schoolgirls began in Newark New Jersey on August 21. The court moved quickly to seat a jury with A J Cassatt identified as president of the Pennsylvania Railroad and C H Dippo held in $1000 bond awaiting grand jury action.
Track laying on the Interurban line between this city and Danville is finished though leveling and ballasting remain. Superintendent Pepper expects through service to begin Thursday with the first through car arriving Saturday afternoon under his charge. A power house at Fithian is finished but equipment awaits installation before service starts.
The Knights Templar from Champaign Ok left for Peoria this afternoon to join the state conclave. At 3 o clock they marched to the depot and arrived in fine order for the parade tomorrow. Members listed include Bir Knights Ben Mollet John N Beers H W Berks Dan Swanneil George L Tenny and many others from Champaign Monticello and Sadorns.
ARS of the Firmingham Post reports stabbings are daily at Beyras. An English archdeacon was recently attacked there in broad day.
Masked bandits fire through an office window killing Frank Stewart and Motorman Jon B. Johnson during a daytime robbery at the Chicago City Railway barns at Sixty-first and State streets. The robbers net $3,000 and vanish as dawn light fades, in just about a minute.
Chehik Bay Turkish minister to the United States held a long conference with Secretary Hay in Washington this morning. He showed exultation after leaving the talks but gave no comment on the conference’s object. Secretary Hay then met privately with Acting Secretary Darling. The State Department denies any recall request from Constantinople and says no change to the Seet’s program is planned.
Sidney August 21 work on raising and grading the Wabash tracks to cross the Frisco line is nearly finished. The project raises the Wabash over Frisco at a height requiring substantial earthwork with costs borne by the Wabash company.
A morning fire at Thomas L. Dalton's restaurant in Sidney, started by matches, destroyed two frame buildings and damaged several stores. Firefighters from Champaign and Urbana aided after 5 AM as flames threatened the brick structures and power lines. one man injured, losses estimated near $6,000 with $1,000 insurance on the restaurant.
The railroad announces a new mail service this week adding four daily runs. Trains from Champaign will begin No 6 and the following No 4 will offer a meal car from Celentale to Chives. No 5 and No 1 will operate from Chicago to Kondale with arrivals around 2 45 pm.
A local meeting outlined a plan to belt two origins to Maart ide pgye with 2500 feet of cement eel to be laid. The group discussed sanctioned tones and a specified set of tasks for the project completion.
