A citizen started a farm to raise ostriches in America after discovering most plumes came from Africa. The venture increased domestic availability and helped reduce prices, signaling a shift in the ostrich feather market.
The board of trustees municipal committee met at the university building to select architects for the new women's buildings and related interior changes. Committees named C H Boston George W Bullard 8 S Belden Frank Miles Joseph G C Llewellyn and others were chosen with stipulations to be fulfilled by the winners.
Aug. 6 report from Centerville states Hunter, son of Mr. and Mrs. Minor, died after a shock at his home. His father, who died Tuesday, and other family members were identified in the official account. Justice Secrist handled the inquest proceedings as the body was being laid out.
New York August 5 Stocks fell sharply at the opening amid heavy liquidation after the announced failure of Sharp and Bryan. Prices hit new lows in the first minutes, with Atchison down to 5844 and onion incidents dipping to 70 percent. Warlbutt Hatch and Co also announced failures with liabilities around 5,990,600 dollars, all secured.
In Cynthiana Mrs Lulu-South sister of Judge Hargis took the stand and swore Marcum and his wife had been unfriendly. She said she saw Marcum fall when shot and was indifferent about it. Dre Taulbee Thomas O Connor Police Judge Noble and others testified. The judge said he believed Jett innocent despite heard evidence and watched Marcum as the shooting occurred.
During Monday evening's storm the Carley school house near Thomasboro was struck by lightning and burned to the ground, a severe loss as the term nears. Similarly, the McFarland farm near Gifford was struck, with a large harness, hay, and livestock destroyed, though two horses and part of the harness were saved.
J L Ray of Champaign dismisses rumors of a Champaign Tuscola interurban line saying farmers in the southern county seek one and he has discussed it with some of them. He adds there is nothing more to the story at this time.
M G Snyder's bid of 59 dollars for interior work on the city building leads bids at a Tuesday council meeting. The Willian Price Estate offered 1 dollar and J C Chapman 140 with 310 extra to cover Snyder's prior work. The council approves Snyder's bid with the other appropriations and reports note city finances, street repairs, and bridge maintenance amid a series of committee referrals.
The July report by Chief Keller shows total arrests six, total fines assessed 505.6 million, and fines collected 198.70. Claims allowed include C. D. Stevens 5.45, S. L. West 3.50, The News 16.05, Morrell Manufacturing 25, Vercival and Morehead 10.59, B. BR Hammer 6.40, G. C. Willis 64.0, B. Phillips 13, special police 11.04, and W. E. Schowengerdt 10.0. Total expenses itemized include ditch and gutter cleaning 99.06, rubbish hauling 5543 percent, general 159.13, sweeping pavement 145.05, and ward totals 212.46 for First, 2297 for Second, 3307.51 for Third, 167.53 for Fourth, 214.10 for Fifth, plus general 1399.19.
Spokane Washington August 5 a mob stormed the jail at dawn lynching William Hamilton a wealthy farmer after his confession to raping and murdering Mabel Richards the 13 year old daughter of the Asotin county sheriff. Hamilton reportedly met the girl in the woods and killed her to prevent her from telling. The mob of about a thousand masked men acted quietly during the crime and carried out the sentence at the jail.
Decatur golfers will face Champlain Golf Club representatives at the fair grounds. Champlain will field players after visiting numbers are known. Dan Morrissey Jr. from Champlain has broken the nine hole course record with 85 for nine. Morrissey also posted 78 for out and return. He is in excellent form and expected to challenge Decatur players.
A brief cloudburst fell in Hoopeston at 9 30 this morning bringing torrents and a high wind. The downpour lasted only a few minutes but caused no serious damage or injuries in the town.
Interior decoration of the high school is under renovation by painters. The halls and several rooms are being calfenimed in subdued colors to create a warm and pretty effect. A new basement recitation room is one of the building’s best features and is expected to be popular with instructors and students.
The Episcopal church Sunday school planned a picnic at Crystal Lake park on Wednesday but rain canceled the event. To avoid disappointing the children, those who gathered at the church were invited to the rectory on State Street and Springfield Avenue for an extended gathering, with the outing rescheduled for next week.
Austere examination of jurors in the Caleb Powers trial continued this morning in Georgetown Kentucky. The pool consists mainly of farmers from Bourbon county as lawyers probe qualifications and possible biases for the high profile case.

Mrs Elizabeth Rice, widow, aged years, died Wednesday at her son John's home 24 miles east of Mayview. A devoted member of the Methodist church, she lived in the community for years and is survived by two daughters Mrs Elllis Hoffues of Mayview and Mrs Cora Sesore of Sidney along with others.
