Seattle report notes that a $65,000 offer to receiver Sutcliffe Baxter for the McCarthy Drygoods stock was rejected by Judge Hanford. After Hanford's receiver Dexter ran the store for a year creditors recovered about 19 cents on the dollar, versus 70 cents if the offer had been accepted.
Preparations for large scale war games underway in the vicinity next Saturday lasting ten days. The Blue Brigade will assemble in the city under Col. Young and move from Centralia to meet the Red Army from Montesano near Gate City. Local Co M to join as part of the Blue Army.
Hustis of the Chicago Burlington & Quincy railroad assigns blame for the Western Springs wreck that killed 13 and injured many. John Woodruff flagman and George Brownson engineer are named, with Woodruff accused of failing to protect the rear and Brownson accused of passing a block signal. Federal authorities lead the investigation with possible arrests. Victims identified include Mia Clarke Sheidan Potter and her daughter.
Nine candidates have filed to date for county offices. Listed are W. Be Bishop of Chehalis for prosecuting attorney. C. A. Packenham of Chehalis for sheriff. Grant Wright of Laikum for sheriff. Thomas H. Gray of Winlock for county commissioners. John S. Ward of Centralia for county engineer. C. E. Pennington of Boistfort for county commissioner. W. E. Arnold of Morton representative from the 27th district. T. C. Foster of Chehalis for sheriff. and I. J. Sticklin of Chehalis for coroner.
The sheriff's office sent 45 notices urging residents to appear before the state tax board in Centralia and Chehalis to testify about property values for 1919 assessment. Chehalis meeting is in the county assessor's office and Centralia in the elf y hall.
Herbert Robinson of the Centralia Commercial Club reports a Northwest Development Club offer of 5000 dollars for the best five bushels of wheat. Farmers near Centralia are urged to enter. Judges will be chosen from outside the three states by agricultural school presidents. The contest runs with the Northwestern Exposition in Minneapolis from November 12 to 23.
At a meeting in Hoguiam the league decided to abandon baseball in the city after Aberdeen and Centralia dropped out and attendance fell. Gate receipts for Hoguiam games on Tuesday, Friday and Saturday were $13.
United Press reports promoter Tom McCarey has secured terms for a light weight championship rematch between Joe Avers and Wolgast at Vernon on Labor Day. Wolgast and his manager Jones indicate acceptance of Mel Cavey’s terms and signing is expected soon.
Lebam residents watch for a new financial venture named the Private Bank of Lela to be formed by Raymond businessman RK L Fisher and associate M M Fisher. The venture includes connections to local firms Twin Oly Electric and Suno Company with G R Steluer also named among organizers.
Washington July 16. Great Britain argues the United States may pass its own coastwise ships free through the canal under Hay-Pauncefote while tolls are charged to foreign vessels. Senators Root and Burton outline the fight over free ships as the Hague court could settle the matter if the bill passes. State department says Britain’s protest details arrive soon, possibly with Taft’s message.
A bill by Congressman Sulzer to create a new department of labor passed the house unanimously. It establishes a secretary of labor who will join the cabinet and transfer the bureau of labor to the department, granting broad authority for federal intervention in labor disputes.
Post master General Frank H Hitchcock testified before the senate investigating committee that $1 665 618 was contributed to Taft's 1908 campaign. The figure reflects the total campaign contributions cited during the hearing in Washington on July 17.
London on July 11 reports that thousands of striking dockworkers and their families in the east end face starvation. Irish guards were deployed to disturbed districts to preserve peace amid threats of bloodshed against companions who have taken strikers places.
New York July 17 Lewis Webber held as a suspect in the Herr Rosenthal case was arraigned and remanded for further hearing. Police say Webber stated Rosenthal talked too much and someone would "get him." He received the third degree today as the investigation continues.
Washington July 28 a report that an infernal machine was sent to President Tutt and assistant secretary Sherman Allen and narrowly opened is stated as a joke The agency of the young man who sparked the claim set off widespread alarm across the nation.
The remains of Mr. Wrank THowe who died in Seattle arrived in Centralia last night for funeral services to be held tomorrow. He owned a ranch about two miles east of town.
Directors of School District No. 118 approve a new schoolhouse at Meskill. The brick building will be thoroughly modern in every respect and serve the community with updated facilities.
United Press Leased Wire reports that minority leader James Mann blocked a proposed high cost of wing inquiry in the House to avoid flood of similar probes. The objection halted consideration of a Miller resolution to investigate coal company refusals to sell coal last winter in Two Harbors Minnesota where plans aimed to sell coal against local dealers.
State Senator W. H. Paulhamus of Pierce county will run for governor in the Republican primary. R. A. B. Young, official of the Pierce County Roosevelt club and treasurer of the state progressive group, disclosed the statement after a conference with Paulhamus in Tacoma.
In Washington on July 17 Senator Hailey of Texas introduced a resolution echoing the Lorimer case. It hints President Taft pressed senators to oppose a Illinois senator’s seat, arguing only the senate may judge such rights and that presidential attempts to sway votes violate the Constitution.
Corning New York July 5 United Press Leased Wire engineer H Schroder of the Lackawanna express that crashed into the Buffalo Limited on July 4 killing 41 persons admits taking two drinks the night before and says he later had three soft drinks before going home and sleeping until his call to run the train
Judge Hoss ruled against Py Prandle in a traffic ordinance violation. Fined ten dollars with costs totaling 12.36 dollars.
The annual Wisconsin Federation of Labor convened in Wisconsin on July 1 with routine business on the agenda. Delegates from/trior men and suurbo ygan regions are present as proceedings commence.
Dr T P Francis was tried before Judge How ta on a charge of breaking the citys new traffic ordinance. He was found guilty with no fine but a pending amount due until today Judge Hoss withholds the fine. Francis was arrested July 2 for blocking Main street with his horse and buggy. Defense attacked police and city officials while Judge Dysart called the ordinance foolish and hard to enforce. Officer Compton resigned after being rebuked by judges and special officer Schuman took his place. Final fine set at 10 dollars plus costs. maximum penalty 5 to 100 dollars.
George L Churchill claimed to own land southwest of Centralia and swindled the United States National Bank and several merchants out of a large sum. He deposited a $600 draft at a local bank and bought goods from Bought Hardware and J Hughes Hardware using checks, promising to pay after a supposed Valance delivery. He fled before 32 dollars could be cashed. police issued a warrant as the $500 draft was later found worthless. More possible victims were noted as authorities pursued him.
Two rumorers at the Roderick hotel slid their belongings from a rear window after midnight and vanished leaving a $16 board bill. The proprietor notified police, but with a 12 hour head start the innkeeper decided to drop the chase.
