Government Upheld In Suit to Recover Land Granted Road
The United States government wins in the Oregon land case against Southern Pacific. Judge Wolverton's decision bars the railroad’s claim and rejects cross claims of settlers. Government seeks recovery of two and a half million acres valued at about seventy five million dollars, land originally granted to Oregon and California Railroad Company in the 1860s. The ruling affects Western Oregon rights along the company’s right of way and opens avenues for appeal to the U S Supreme Court.
