A large community celebration in Till section centers on the Southwest Development Association meeting and the Potlatch dedication. Plans include aviation displays by Claude Berlin aiming to break altitude records, a May 20 dedication, and rail and lodging arrangements with Pullman charters and reduced fares to accommodate thousands.
Surviving relatives and friends condemn J Bruce Ismay aging managing director of White Star Line. They question why he did not stay with the Titanic and accuse him of secretive White Star practices and of the Carpathia’s delayed rescue signals. Reports say his presence on the Carpathia fuels anger amid the wreck’s horror.
John Stiltner of Kosmos was arraigned on a statutory offense charge after an April arrest on a warrant. He pled not guilty and was bound over to the Superior Court on $1,000 bond. The alleged crime occurred February 4, involving the 15 year old daughter of John Clevenger, who issued the warrant. Stiltner had left the country and was located a week ago. The case will be heard in the June term.
John Rogers, Wilma timber cruiser, last seen at the local depot platform on March 11, has been located in British Columbia after a continuous family led search. No reason is known for his failure to communicate with relatives.
Representative J Leonard received a shipment of 20,000 trout from the Columbia river hatcheries. The fish were planted in Coal Creek, the Newaukum and other streams in southern Lewis County under the direction of Sheriff Urquhart as part of a 30,000 trout effort for Lens county.
United Press dispatch from Washington quotes Admiral Dewey sharply criticizing ocean liner companies for valuing profit over human life after the Titanic tragedy. He calls for ships to carry sufficient lifeboats for most passengers and urges no vessel sail without adequate lifesaving capacity. A separate item notes the Washington-Oregon Corporation securing a franchise for a power line along an aud military road in Lewis County.
Commissioner Brooswig pressed Northern Pacific on siting the new Chehalis gravity water depot to block passenger trains at Market Street crossing, with a favorable location agreed. The bidder for the creation of the system will be announced late North. Chehalis council votes rent for public hall to discuss the municipal water system. May 7 election looms. Education conference notes at Chicago University. city aims to inform residents for civic decisions.
Former students of Georgetown University and nearby colleges return for a reunion at Glomgetown on April 1, gathering ex alumni and local residents for a brief gathering and program.
County commissioners approve a hard surface road project on the southeast county road from Chohalia toward Geerasarcindy. The plan adds a mile and a quarter of pavement with additional surface to improve travel. Named resident Nat Yates is noted in relation to the project.
An old Lewistown paper shows the 1863 Lewis County tax receipts unearthed by Theo Sizarog of Anna. The 1883 totals were 1543.50, with county 661.05 and school 440.83, territorial 20.22, court 220.22, indicating a large variance of 454,180.61 from 1863, excluding road and school tax.
Chehalis City Treasurer Allen and Deputy Clerk Dethicis filed March financial reports. Treasurer shows March 11 balance of 6969.74 dollars, monthly receipts 16874.75 and expenditures 6506.06, leaving April 1 balance 17830.48. Clerk reports March warrants for current expenses 1108.32 and other expenses 1401.60 totaling 2509.92.
A petition from numerous Napavine residents to incorporate the town was denied by county commissioners after a canvass found insufficient waivers. The action means Napavine will not become an incorporated municipality.
A meeting held at Morton yesterday discussed plans to improve local road conditions. Present were members of the Lewis County commissioners and County Assessor 3. Davis, who attended to review the situation.
The Cheralis school board plans an April meeting to consider a second option on a property adjacent to the high school. The price asks five thousand two hundred fifty dollars. A bonded indebtedness of about one hundred thousand dollars for financing the addition will be decided at a session on the 27th. If built, the new addition would be three times as large as the current building due to the high school’s crowded condition.
United Press notes a wireless from Winfield Thompson aboard the Franconia stating 705 Titanic survivors aboard Carpathia, not 468 as earlier released by White Star. Officials say Carpathia was 489 miles from Ambrose Channel and expected to reach New York Thursday night.
Washington April 17. George Tyler, supervisor of the federal steamboat protection service, says the Titanic disaster resulted from insufficient life boat protection and could not have happened under United States navigation laws. He notes American register would have required forty eight lifeboats in pairs of twenty. He adds that during the collision many could have been saved if lifeboats had been ready.
New York April 17 Revised figures from White Star officials set Titanic disaster victims at 1312 with about 400 steerage passengers 328 Caliln and 440 crew. A wireless from Carpathia carrying 868 survivors reports they are well as it heads toward New York and docks Friday.
Manager Patton signed Hil, the lively Faymond first baseman, after a solid 1911 season. Hill’s hitting and fielding compare well with Bottiger while other signed players train ahead of a Sunday arrival. An exhibition at Olympia is scheduled for next week with locals sending delegates and possibly the band. Additional games with winter and semi pro clubs are planned as funds drive continues toward incorporation.
In Centralia two depots exist old and new and a third matron may be needed. Mrs Melvina Ingalls currently holds the role but applicants Mrs Acketer and Mrs Waring have asked the city commission for depot matron positions. The mayor appoints and the matron reports to him under the existing ordinance.
The city appoints election judges for May 1 to oversee the vote on the municipal gravity water system. The polling will occur at the same Centralia location as the city election.
