Lewis County W C T U Holds Thirteenth Convention in Chehalis
The Lewis County Women’s Christian Temperance Union met August 30–31 at the M E Church in Chehalis for its 13th annual convention presided by Mattin N Graves. Reports highlighted county work, varied departments, and a clear stand against patent medicines containing alcohol. Officers were elected and a public resolutions slate endorsed temperance goals, education, and support for prohibition efforts.

Fatal accident at Chehalis claims local figure Wat Long
On a Wednesday morning in Chehalis Watson C Long known locally as Wat was instantly killed by a shunting engine while watching rock unloadings on a flatcar. He suffered extensive injuries including a severed leg and shoulder dislocation. An inquest found death due to negligence by Northern Pacific Railway Co. Also two other near misses occurred during the same unloading incident. Funeral services were held at the Chehalis Methodist church.

Centralia City Council Elects Gilchrist to Fill Fread Vacancy
The Centralia city council met Tuesday with full attendance. W. H. Fread resigned from the Second Ward, and Charles B. Gilchrist was elected to the vacancy, sworn in, and participated in ongoing business. The board ordered an arc light at the railroad crossing opposite the mill office and discussed street assessments against St. John’s Episcopal Church.

Centralia Driving Association events featured a free for all trot, a half mile running race won by Tone, and a two fifty trot. Colt show awards honored General purpose, Draft, and Driving Colts with top prizes to Will Whealdon, George Batt, and W. H. Leighton respectively. A foot injury sidetracked Mrs. Edith W. Miller, while state senators visited Toledo to discuss Cowlitz river dredging and river navigation. A McCormick Lumber forest fire near McCormick prompted a firefighting response and damage assessment.

Died Professor O A Tiffany Remembered In Centralia
Professor O A Tiffany died at his residence last Friday morning at seven after months of illness from a complication of diseases. Born November 28 1845 in Texas New York he moved with his parents to Owatomia Minnesota and pursued education before teaching in Minnesota California Washington and Centralia. He held life diplomas in Minnesota California and Washington and authored several educational texts. Funeral Monday afternoon at the Episcopal church in Chehalis with Rev Dickson officiating drew a large crowd.
