The store launches a Summer Clearance Sale on Friday July 18 with 20 to 40 percent savings on all stock to clear space for new Fair Goods. No item will be carried over to next season, everything goes, no reserves, and buyers can expect clean up to date goods at substantial savings.
Lists uncalled letters for the week ending July 7 1808 including Bennett Mrs Mary Dayir Dolly We Enslow W Loyle Tones Lunes Mire Marrill Walter Rainey Sam Stewart and more. Note that letters will be sent to the Dead Letter Office if not delivered before July 21 1906.
Surveyors from Union Pacific and Northern Pacific report rapid progress on the rail electrification project between Centralia and Chehalis. The Northern Pacific orders 10 900 ties and heavy rails, with deliveries to Lumber Manufacturers' Agency to speed work. Union Pacific crews survey three miles north of Centralia, led by H W Allen, camping on Gibson place, aiming to condemn a route near D Street area for an accessible alignment.
On Saturday evening June 30 a crowd of about 25 young people surprised Clarence Lynn at his Grand Mound home. They played progressive games late. Sundry Dr and Mrs Damon then bought a new Cadillac in Tacoma and had Chas Andrew drive it home for them.
Monday morning Fred Tugalla was kicked by a stallion at Cook's livery barn as he passed behind it. The horse struck him in the face and chest, crushing his nose and causing a broken nose and severe breast injuries. He required a cast and faced breathing difficulties for days. Friends expect the injuries to not be permanent.
The Bagtean Railway and Lumber Co began digging a ditch to lay an eight inch pipe for fire protection. The line extends from Skooknimehuck River to Third Street and then to the mill. A large pump purchased over a year ago will be installed with a man on standby for emergencies.
George Sleck, about 22, was arrested on a Monday on sworn complaint charging him with assault with intent to commit a felony against Mary Padlinak. He was brought before Justice Miller and committed for further action. bail was set.
South Bend reports an accidental shooting when Leslie Soule and brother Vernon, aged 12, played with a loaded revolver at home. A misfired cartridge discharged as they aimed at a target, the bullet striking Vernon and causing his death about 2 AM. Father S A Soule, a noted Pacific County logger, is cited. Jury commissioners Bennett and West completed a list of over seven hundred names for the coming year, noting improved eligibility screening.
Eighteen men presumed Union Pacific surveyors camped north of Centralia to lay out lines and stakes. Allen in charge says work for Union Pacific. Project aims to parallel Northern Pacific from the Columbian river north, avoiding Napavine and Rainier hills, crossing the Northern Pacific at least twice between Napavine and Rainier, likely by crossing south of Chehalis and following the old grade near Centralia.
Mrs. Fannie M. Canon died at her home in Centralia on Monday from apoplexy. Born in Bangor Maine on December 22 1831 she married June 23 1853 and moved to Centralia about four years ago. Funeral services were held Tuesday July 10 at the M E church conducted by Rev H W Thompson with interment in Washington Law cemetery. She leaves eleven children seven of whom survive. five sons and two daughters among the survivors. Several children are noted as prominent residents of Centralia.
Deliah Skillings, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Louis Skillings, died July 2 from whooping cough. Funeral held July 3 at home with Rev. H W Thompson officiating. Interment in Mountain View Cemetery. Parents grieve amid widespread community sorrow.
George D Berlin of Tacoma buys the Jordon livery barn in Centralia after selling a nearby farm. He plans to move into Centralia and bring rigs and horses to the livery. A second buyer, Hinson, purchases a brick store in Chehalis and will operate in Lewis County. Tickets and schedules for weekly round trips and fares to Tacoma and centralia are listed, with several route details and prices.
The Lewis County Commissioners meet July 22 1908 approving petitions for road creation and fencing along county roads. They designate a new voting precinct named Kopian Precinct and order surveys on proposed roads. They approve bond and petition for J. Banker and others, appoints Rogers Brook as deputy road supervisor, and authorize bids for Jorgensen Bridge and Centralia Chehalis road gravel.
