Grant Polk toast prank at Columbus Kentucky reunion
A Cincinnati correspondent recounts a Civil War tale of sharp practice between General Grant and Reverend General Polk at Columbus Kentucky. During a truce gesture wine was shared and Polk toasted “To General George Washington” then added “the flat rebel.” Grant later warned, then matched with a joke on “Equal rights to all white and black” leaving Southern generals laughing at their expense.
