Sugar Beet Experiment Attracts Northwest Farmers
A 1862 winter report details William Osborn of Illinois Central and William H Belcher of Chicago sugar refinery importing hundreds of pounds of beet seeds from Europe. They distributed seeds among Northwest farmers to test cultivation potential, noting promising results across Wisconsin and eastern Iowa. Plans included a large scale plantation near Charterworth, Livingston County, with a 150 foot long by 100 foot wide sugar beet processing plant and a 1,900 acre trial in 1862-63. Beets were harvested, juice extracted, and syrup sent to St. Louis for trial. yield estimates suggested substantial potential, though costs were not disclosed.
