An eight year old heiress, Violet Maitland Radcliffe of Cardiff, England, is unaware of her inheritance. She plans to live on two pennies a day as spending money and uses the allowance to buy sugar for her dog.

Rock Island’s First Train 70 Years Ago

Rock Island’s first railway in Iowa opened Oct 10 1852 with service from Chicago. Davenport saw the first earth moved for the line in 1855 on the Mississippi & Missouri Railroad later reaching Iowa City Des Moines Council Bluffs and other towns by 1879 the Rock Island network grew to the state’s extensive mileage.

Dubuque County Sheriff Catches First Fish

Dubuque on March 16 reports Sheriff F J Kennedy bringing a string of sheepshead perch to the office while surveying spring waters. He had fifteen perch with one over four pounds. He did not reveal the water source but said the water is fine, streams are ice free and the river is open.

1922 Taxes For Iowa Are 8 Per Cent Higher

Des Moines report shows Iowa taxes rise by about seven million seven hundred seventy one thousand dollars in the past year. Secretary R E Johnson released a table breaking down increases by class and how each tax dollar is split among state, county, city and school uses. The article notes revisions in levy shares and emphasizes schools receive a large portion of the total tax take.

The report shows a state tax increase over 17 percent while county taxes rise by less than 1 percent and school taxes about 12 percent. A MEL church Pastor's Aid society apron and bake sale will be at Ruhl grocery on April 1 with proceeds likely aiding church needs.

Sale of Bonds by Vinton City Council

Notice states Vinton Iowa will offer for sale at its March 20 1922 meeting bonds bearing 6 percent interest from April 1 1922 with semi annual payments. Principal amounts include 1000 due by April 1 1924 1925 1926 and 1927. City may prepaid on any interest date with six months notice. Bonds issued to satisfy a judgment against the city by heirs of John Mellroy W E Gilchrist city clerk.
