LeMars official reports a Fuller Brush salesman J A Root aged 25 shot himself in his room, dying instantly. No motive given. Root had relatives in Sioux City.
Senate finance Chairman Smoot opened debate on the 352 million federal tax cut bill, urging immediate consideration and a February 10 passage. He defended a lower surtax from 40 to 20 percent, urged repeal of the publicity clause, and defended restoring inheritance tax and keeping excise taxes on autos, trucks, and alcohol.
Mason City January 28 members of the Iowa Engineering society opened their annual convention by weighing road construction problems and later turned to surface treatment city planning and electrification. H F Clemmer described use of oil and calcium chloride for maintaining earth and gravel roads.

Decorah Iowa Jan 28 Harry Harvey of Burr Oak is nursing a fractured shoulder after his sleigh overturned in a wild wind while he was taking his children home from school The same storm forced eight motorists to abandon their cars between Decorah and Burr Oak as drivers sought shelter at farm houses.
Captain George Fried and the crew of the President Roosevelt rescued the British freighter Antinoe’s crew after a sea state left the freighter waterlogged. Two Roosevelt sailors died during the salvage. five life boats were smashed in the perilous operation as the liner stood by since Sunday with passengers cheering.
Des Moines January 28 The corn belt committee of farm organizations and the American Council of Agriculture urged John O Leary president of the United States Chamber of Commerce to address agricultural problems constructively. In a telegram signed by William Hirth and F W Murphy the group accused O Leary of misrepresentations about the McNary Haugen and Dickinson bills and pressed for a clear economic stance to aid farmers facing postwar trade imbalances and farm surplus. They questioned the propriety of mere criticism without offering solutions.
Tokio January 28 following the death of Viscount T Kato premier the Japanese cabinet resigned today. The premier was stricken at the week end with influenza and Home Minister Wakatski was appointed as temporary premier. Kato died yesterday. Home Minister Wakatsuka was today named premier ad interim.
Special to Daily Times February 28 The trial of Jake Manley for stealing several sacks of clover seed will start Monday after the petit jury was summoned. Manley is the only defendant listed for trial who has not pleaded guilty and received punishment.
Belgium held a national funeral for Cardinal Mercier with royalty, peasants, and workers paying respects at St. Gudule. His casket glowed in the church as tolling chimes marked the tribute, and he was later laid to rest in Malines beneath the cathedral altar.
Benton County residents report thirteen degrees below zero in Vinton as a brutal gale and wind chill inflict suffering on livestock and people. Across the region severe cold continues with motorists fearing ditches on exposed roads and widespread hardships reported. Ed Kauffman alias Chick Blakely, 27, was jailed for thirty days by Mayor C. W. Grady after stealing coal in Van Horne. He confessed his real name is Kauffman, and that Pearl Blakely of New Vienna Ohio posed as his wife. He came from Springfield Ohio with the girl last fall.

A Folkist resolution demanded halting Dawes Plan payments for relief and urged Germany not to join the League of Nations. Socialists abstained on confidence, leaving Luther s fate to a few votes.
