Iowa Railroads and Growth Amid Fiscal Debate
The article surveys Iowa’s population, land, and rail progress, noting four counties with about 100000 residents and strong soil. It highlights railroad expansion, with 600 new miles and total near 3000 miles, earnings around 12 million, and Iowa as a key destination for labor and capital. It then critiques Democratic leaders and repudiation rhetoric, arguing moral obligation to pay national debts is morally unclear and politically contested.

North Missouri Railroad sale and related bond details
The North Missouri Railroad was sold at auction in St Louis for 2 million dollars in cash. Three thousand five hundred shares in the St Charles bridge across the Missouri river, owned by the company, sold at 25 dollars per share with Jessup of New York buying. The purchaser assumes 38 million in first mortgage bonds and there is about 2.5 million in floating debt, with about half the value of the road believed to be real. Jessup also owns the Dubuque and Southwestern Railroad and funds the St Louis to Cedar Rapids line. Local fear about Chicago interests influencing control eased after Jessup’s involvement.
