Uncertain planetary theory amid a year of disasters and political blame
The text surveys a string of 19th century woes and political heat, noting five cyclones and other disasters as unprecedented. It questions planetary near approach theories while recounting US economic losses, Ohio Republican embarrassment, and various legal and political troubles including Moore's heresy ruling, Kearney and Kalloch sentences, Tilden’s imagined paralysis, delegate tallies, a libel settlement, and McArthur's embezzlement conviction.

Obituary of Rev. A C McClelland in Pittsburgh
The Rev. A C McClelland, oldest of eight children and brother to the Times editor, died at his home in Pittsburgh on April 19 after seven months of illness and a longer period of declining health. Born near New Alexandria, Pa in 1815, he served as pastor in Indiana and Iowa and as corresponding secretary for the General Assembly's Committee on Freedmen, shaping church work amid financial strain and reunification. His long life of service included travel to Scotland and extensive work with Freedmen, with his death mourned deeply by his congregation and many ministries.
