Cedar Rapids Spring freshet damages bridges and mills
The Cedar Rapids area suffered severe ice and flood damage during the spring freshet of 1872. The Cedar River dam and several mills, Bourne’s mill and Cooper’s mill, sustained heavy structural losses as ice crushed supports and carried away sections of the dam. The destruction affected local power and industry, with recovery likely months away depending on water levels. The toll bridge on the river also collapsed, pushing urgency for a new free bridge. The writer notes broader river damage above town and reflects on Cedar Rapids’ resilience and the Burlington road trip.
