Origin of the Poland-China hog in Ohio revealed
A detailed report from Union Village Ohio about the formation of the Poland-China breed. It traces early crossbreeding with Berkshire Irish Grazier and Big China stock used by Warren and Butler county breeders. The report notes Shaker purchases in 1818 and gradual Berkshire influence through 1830, culminating in a stable, proven line with fixed traits and high prolificacy.

Early orchard advice cold with Hardy Duchess and Fameuse
Nineteenth century orchard guidance describes pests and fraud by a tree peddler, then favors Duchess of Oldenburg as hardy and productive, Fameuse for beauty and flavor, and notes other varieties like Tetofsky and Huns. It warns against ridge planting, praises level ground, asserts raspberries and small fruits thrive while blackberries struggle, and mentions a New Jersey railroad gas test facility at Communipark depot.
