Contested County Seat Petition Sparks Heated Debate
The Cedar Rapids relocation dispute wrangles over remonstrances and petitions. Officials debate the legality of signatures and the right to strike names, while Major Thompson faces censure for harsh remarks about Cedar Rapids citizens. The board adjourns to Wednesday amid testimony hearings and name counting, with a likely vote on the county seat relocation at the polls.

New Democratic Nostrum Draws Mixed Patient Reactions
The Ottumwa Democrat reports mixed reactions to Vallandigham's New Democratic Nostrum as a remedy for party ills. Some swallow it reluctantly while others resist, likening it to substituting water for benzine. The piece cites a protest from readers arguing against imposing radical Amendments and condemns the men driving Democratic reforms.
Vallandigham's New Departure Prompts Genteel Satire
The Cincinnati Gazette skewers Vallandigham and the Democratic party for a reformist shift, lampooning a proposed platform change as Republican clothing. The Ohio Democratic convention rejects a bold anti Reconstruction amendment, while editors mock Vallandigham's stance on race and marriage in biting commentary.

First passage on Iowa Democracy by Dean informs hard line plan
The Ottumwa Democrat prints Henry Clay Dean's call for an aggressive Democratic platform, restoring constitutional liberty and local self government, opposing the National Code, and a shift toward Southern alliances. It cites Columbus Copperheads, Tammany imagery, and a new birth for Town Democrats at the up-coming State Convention. It also notes General Sherman stating he never wishes to be President, a rare stance from a leading figure.
