A long column urges farmers to invest daily in reading and self-improvement, arguing better farming comes from studying agriculture and reflection. It cites dairy farming costs in Iowa, parenting tips on firm discipline, and advice on avoiding colds, with anecdotes of prison escape and a pardon case illustrating consequences of restraint and perseverance.
A fragmentary piece centers on Simon Short a sharp sewed shoemaker in Smithfield and his family. The passing scene features Sally urging Samuel Short to court Sophia Sophronia Spriggs as the pair exchange songs and stilted dialogue amid a flurry of alliterative phrases. Also noted is Edward Norton the muted criminal in New Jersey recently pardoned after long sentence.
