A British Association note argues that standard lightning rods mainly benefit surrounding areas and clouds rather than the protected building. It proposes shielding a powder mill with thick copper sheathing to prevent interior electrical effects, or else wrap copper around a house foundation and corners, with no need for earth leakage aids if no distant metal connections exist.
John S. Morton and Samuel P. Hubs were convicted of issuing a forged stock certificate for 100 shares of the West Philadelphia Passenger Railway Company. The act involved about ten thousand shares worth roughly five hundred thousand dollars. The court sentenced both men to ten years in the Eastern Penitentiary, with a penny fine to the Commonwealth, and to be held until the sentence is served. Morton and Hahn were processed, stripped, and placed in solitary-like confinement with a Bible and prison rules, awaiting assignment to honest work.
