Inventor Thomas Sheehan and the grappling tap saga
In 1858 Thomas Sheehan of Dunkirk New York devised a grappling device for coal handling. After poverty and failed credit, a chance discovery from old chemistry books led to a hardening process turning iron into steel. By 1867 1868 his patents expanded. Twenty three U.S. railways use the process yielding licenses and large revenue. The tale blends invention, perseverance and a sudden fortune.
