Old-Time Banking and the Dexter Cabin Coin Run
Amusing Detroit tale recounts the 1839 Farmers and Mechanics Bank crisis. A note drought forced inventive rescue via private injunction delaying coin payouts. A Dexter traveler demanded coin to catch a train as the cashier weighed a thousand half dollars by hand. The injunction arrived too late to seal the bank’s fate, merger soon followed, and the cashier remained a local character in Detroit.

Striking landscape sketches noted from diverse voices
In a distant scene a small lake frames a striking landscape as a gentleman sharpens pencils beside an Indiana subject. A Piute boy, about sixteen, displays notable drawing aptitude of locomotives and trains, illustrating close study of mechanical details. The report also mentions the Greek Church in Cyprus renewing ties with England and a French dentist performing a novel tooth transplantation.
