A long reader excerpt recalls family hardship, farm life, and moral trials, detailing a mother’s care, sons’ departures, poverty, debts, and the impact of lineage. The piece threads through marriage, work, illness, and a grim sense of endurance in a rural community.
A Milwaukee Sentinel clipping notes M. Dumas eulogizes M. Desbarellas a chiromancy expert. The article argues phrenology and palmistry are obsolete, citing progress in brain science and modern physiology. It mentions busts of phrenology, the limits of palm readings, and the enduring but phased remnants of early mind theories.
A lengthy account outlines how postage stamps are designed and printed, detailing engraving on steel, colorings, drying, gum composition from vegetable powders, and pressing to form sheets. It notes strict security with burned sheets if stamps are damaged and reports on laborers, including a few young workers, and the meticulous counting to prevent theft.
A flood of property notices from Greene Bros to Simon & Pope offers farms, cottages, and lots in Cedar Rapids and surrounding towns. Listings include river-road parcels, improved farms in Buena Vista and Linn counties, and exchanges for Nebraska land, with prices ranging around hundreds to thousands per acre.
Fragmentary OCR lists land values and acreage in Hancock county and Worth county with prices per acre. References to wild land quantities, parcels offered, and per acre amounts appear, though the text is garbled and partially unreadable.
