North Liberty pantry to break ground on $4M new facility
The North Liberty Community Pantry will break ground at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday on a $4 million 10,500 square foot facility at 350 W. Penn St. The current 2,400 square foot site at 89 N. Jones Blvd. relies on partners for freezer space. The new building adds 4,000 square feet for storage, a 550 square foot walk in refrigeration unit, and 1,000 square feet for a clothing closet. The pantry distributed 588,000 pounds of food last year and aims for 2,400 deliveries this year. It serves Johnson County residents except Coralville and Iowa City, which receive referrals. The project has raised more than $850,000 and includes land purchase and new equipment costs.
