GUEST COLUMN ON LOCAL FOOD SUSTAINABILITY BY PAUL DEATON
Paul Deaton argues that a resilient local food system requires cooperation among farmers, customers, and community, amid economic and policy pressures. He cites pioneers Denise O'Brien Dick Thompson Fred Kirschenmann Francis Thicke Laura Krause Susan Jutz and farmers Tony Thompson Kate Edwards Carmen Black as exemplars and notes climate change and rising inequality threaten local markets. He urges readers to know their local farmers and support diversified, community driven food networks.
