Rim Fire's scars may shape Sierra forests for decades
The Rim Fire near Stanislaus National Forest and Yosemite burned 401 square miles since August 17, killing millions of trees and leaving large areas with little chance of regrowth. Surveys show high soil erosion risk in 7 percent of burned land, with most areas severely burned above ground. Foresters plan erosion control work while scientists warn landscapes could permanently change if salvage logging and rapid recovery efforts proceed or don't proceed.
