Walter Reuther resumed efforts for a quick contract settlement with Chrysler after issuing a back to work order. He moved GM strike deadline from Tuesday to Thursday to win thousands of premature strikers back on the job. 41,000 had returned to GM and Chrysler plants with production seen near 90 percent by Tuesday.
Cedar Rapids fire department faced a pay raise push after Richard D. Crissinger resigned effective Oct. 4 citing higher living costs and low remuneration. Fire Chief Jesse Hunter praised Crissinger and urged aligning firefighter pay with business and industry to attract and retain personnel. council accepted the resignation without comment.
The 2 day convention of the central section of the American Association of Orthodontists began at the Roosevelt hotel with about 150 orthodontists in attendance. Dr. Fredrick Lehman opened the session as president and speakers included Drs. Moorrees Brandhorst Gaston Meredith Guerrero and Thompson. The program continues Tuesday with further meetings and officer elections.
The court clarifies that deliberate speed allows some delay if local plans are in good faith to desegregate promptly. It notes immediate admission may be required where appropriate, but stresses district courts may justify delays absent hostility, while demanding active measures toward earliest feasible desegregation and avoidance of rights-denying delays.
The council split as Commissioner Johnson pushed a one way traffic resolution for Thirty-eighth Street. Meaghan Gardner and Shank outvoted Johnson to table the measure, Halvorson absent. The Bartletts claim harm from restricted access while Johnson blasts the current signal setup as flawed.
The Nationalists decided to garrison and fortify the islands with U.S. approval seen as recognizing their importance. Chiang warned that without the islands the fighting could have spread deeper into the For mosa strait and elsewhere in Asia. He noted concerns about growing U.S. public opinion not supporting the firm stand.
The speaker warned that hostilities could extend but strong defense has stalled aggression and prevented spread. He predicted that if Red China provoked a major war, mainland residents would revolt within three months.
Linn county's Illinois Gas and Electric Co. paid the 1957 property tax half totaling 112 555 19. County Treasurer Frank Bates received the check from James Colbert district manager. This brings Linn county taxes paid by the gas company to 225 110 41, up 11 346 95 from last year. The company's total tax bill last year was about 8 653 000, roughly 22 cents of every dollar.
Two men were fined 300 dollars each after pleading guilty to drunk driving in district court on Monday. Chalmer C. Seidel, 37, of 38864 Old Marion road NE, was arrested Feb 20 at First avenue and Twenty ninth street SE following a near collision with a police car. Louis G. Fink, 22, of Chicago, was picked up May 8 after backing into a car in front of Joe and Cliff's, 730 First Ave NE. A second offense drunk driving charge was filed against John B. Cummings, 39, of 515 Third Ave SW, arrested Saturday night by the highway patrol west of Mt. Vernon on Highway 30. Cummings had a prior Linn County conviction on Sept. 6, 1958. Laurence D. DeWoody, 58, of 215 Eighteenth St NE, received a 10-year parole sentence after pleading guilty to sodomy.
Jury selected in a damage suit trial arising from a Aug 2 1956 highway 30 crash ten miles east of Cedar Rapids. Plaintiffs Stella Yanush and Raymond J Byers seek 37404.75 against James Luhan and Doris Lukanov who counterclaim 34218.35. Jurors include Karl Biskup Leo Rogers Raymond Ulrich Lloyd Mallie Edward Van Cura Ronald Caldwell Henry Hexdall Wayne Jacobson Walter Cope Charles Probst Norma Sampson Wendell Hedgcock Jr all Cedar Rapids residents.
The will of James H. Musel, who died September 19, named his wife Julia and St Joseph's Catholic Church in Chelsea as beneficiaries. Mrs Musel was confirmed executrix.
A petition seeking 270 dollars was filed by Leo G. Cerney against Zack A. Tranmer for injuries from an auto accident in Cedar Rapids on May 1.
Jesse Kenneth Scheppele, a World War I veteran and longtime Cedar Rapids resident, died Sunday after a sudden illness. Born August 12, 1897 in Dubuque, he worked as a salesman for Allen Motor Co and owned Auto Radiator Service. Survived by wife Emma Ledvina, a sister Bertha Gillette, and three brothers, he was active in Elks, South Side Civic, and Cedar Rapids Baseball Club. Services Tuesday at Turner's, burial Cedar Memorial.
Frank R. Novotny 82, a retired farmer and well driller, died in a Cedar Rapids nursing home after a long illness. A Cedar Rapids resident 11 years, he was born near Solon in 1875 and lived most of his life around Shueyville. He belonged to Ely lodge 16 ZCBJ and YMCA. survived by a daughter, four sons, a sister, and a brother. Services were held at Brush chapel with Rev. Bellus and Rev. Pokorny officiating. burial at Sulek Cemetery near Ely. viewing available Tuesday at the chapel.
Two balloonists Air Force Lt. Clifton McClure and instructor M. Lee Lewis reported a sniper fired seven times from a dirt road about 10 miles northwest of West Union Iowa as they floated at 3 000 feet on a qualifying flight. Bullets passed within 15 feet and the group on the ground fled. The event occurred during a training ascent set to reach 100 000 feet from Crosby Minnesota.

Agnes Truesdell widow of Albert Truesdell of 920 Twentieth Ave. SW died at the Soldiers Home in Marshalltown Sunday after a long illness. Born September 26, 1883 in Renfrew Scotland, she leaves Alice E. Urban and son Albert J. of Cedar Rapids. A member of Sharon E.A.B. church and the Spanish American War auxiliary. Services at Turner's at 3:30 Tuesday conducted by Rev. Walter Cerka. Burial at Cedar Memorial. Friends may call at the chapel.
Mrs. Charles B. Svoboda of 1847 First Ave SE, a 53 year resident, died after a long illness. Born November 24, 1877 in Jicin Czechoslovakia, she was a member of Peoples Church and local social groups. Services Wednesday at Turner's with cremation. Memorials to Cancer or Heart funds suggested.
Grace Denny a lifelong Cedar Rapids resident and retired Wilson and Company employee died Sunday. Born March 27 1888 she was affiliated with Trinity Methodist church. Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 2 at Rohn funeral home with Reverend Glenn S Hartong officiating. Burial will be at Linwood. Friends may call at the funeral home after 2 Tuesday.

Cedar Rapids city council ordered no parking on the school side near Polk school from 6 am to 6 pm daily except Sundays and holidays to curb children darting between cars. Fences were deemed a future solution but cannot be installed this year. Prohibited zones include East side of Fifteenth Street NE from B to C Avenue, South side of C Avenue NE from Fifteenth Street eastward to an alley, and North side of B Avenue NE from Fifteenth Street to the school property line.
The French embassy in Washington said on Monday that French citizens in the United States backed the new constitution in a vote. About 26 000 were registered, with around 6 000 ballots received and roughly 300 voting no while 5 700 approved the charter.
Cedar Rapids city council received two rezoning requests on Monday. Both petitions were referred to the City Plan Commission for study and recommendation before any council decision.
