Linn-Mar schools earned honors in the Nation's Schools Report 1976 contest. The 1975 76 activity calendar received third place in the calendar category, planned by the parent school communications committee led by Glen Goehring. Other members included Betty Becker Karen Lortz Susan Stark and others. The calendar was produced by Grant Wood Area Education Agency under John H Schone. Also noted are awards for dedication and open house brochure and program for the September 1975 building dedication renamed Main elementary to Rudy Novak with Mrs Kress as writer and photographer.

Dubuque Native Named Iowa Guard Commander
Brig. Gen. Francis J. Kelly of Dubuque was named commander of the Iowa army national guard by Gov. Robert D. Ray. A 30‑year guard veteran, he previously served as assistant division commander of the 47th Infantry Division in Iowa and Minnesota. He succeeds Brig. Gen. Joseph Flatt of Ankeny, who retired.

Two individuals faced drunk driving charges after separate incidents Tuesday morning in Cedar Rapids. Jeffery E. Szabo, 21, of 1221 Sixth Street NW, allegedly sped and wrecked near the Third Street and Eighth Avenue SE dip and was arrested at 12:40 a.m. Lavern K. Quanrude, 29, of 521 Third Avenue SW, was stopped after crossing the center line near Avenue A and Tenth Street NW and taken into custody at 2:07 a.m.

Oelwein Council Backs Ordinance Despite Mayor’s Refusal
The Oelwein city council approved a final reading of a duties ordinance by a 5-1 vote despite Mayor Louis Hull calling it void and saying he would not follow it. City Atty. Darold Jack defended the measure endorsing state law and League support. Hull cited a Cedar Falls mayor’s opinion and claimed the council was not his boss.
