IPERS Iowa eyes higher contributions to ease pension gap
Iowa lawmakers and consultants warn the IPERS pension fund cannot self funding and highlight a potential rise in contributions. The plan considers raising employer and employee rates from 9.45 percent to about 13.25 percent over years while maintaining current defined benefit structure.
Poverty rising nationwide and Iowa concerns marked by sample limits
The Census Bureau reports 12.1 percent of U S households below the poverty line in 2002 up from 11.7 percent in 2001 totaling about 34.6 million Americans. Iowa shows 8.3 percent in poverty but officials warn the figure may be unreliable due to a small sample size and higher actual rates. The federal measure is lower than Iowa's in determining aid like school lunches. Salvation Army Cedar Rapids notes rising demand with 2,866 meals served in August and 435 social services provided amid stretched budgets. Captain Dawn Hayman and office manager Donnell Hoppes emphasize continuing strain. Contact: Lyle Muller.
