U.S. Poverty Rate Falls to 21-Year Low
Census data show the 1999 poverty rate at 11.8 percent the lowest in 21 years with 32.2 million Americans in poverty down from 34.4 million. Median household income rose to a record high while child poverty dropped to 16.9 percent. Iowa's rate fell to 8.3 percent and incomes rose 2.7 percent to 40 816 inflation adjusted.

Two Middle School Boys Wound Each Other in Shootout
In New Orleans at Carter G. Woodson Middle School two eighth graders aged 13 and 15 shot each other with a revolver after a weapon was slipped through a fence. Both youths were in critical condition as witnesses described a noon breezeway incident near the cafeteria. Police recovered a .38 revolver and search for the alleged helper who may have once attended the school.
