Union Hike to Double AFL CIO Head Tax After Reuther Exit
Atlantic City AP The AFL CIO Industrial Union Department votes to double the per member monthly head tax from 2 to 4 cents, raising annual income to 2.6 million to fill a treasury gap left by Walter Reuther when he led United Auto Workers out of the federation. President I W Abel of the United Steel Workers cites depleted liquid assets and ongoing organizing drives as reasons for the increase. Delegates, about 400, approve the plan, with some unions absorbing the rise in current dues while others may pass costs to members. The department, rooted in the CIO before its 14 year merger with the AFL, seeks funds for new organizing and coordinated bargaining efforts.
