Immigrants Become U.S. Citizens in Rambling Ceremony

Seventy five people from Canada Mexico China France Russia Romania South Korea and Sri Lanka were naturalized in a 45 minute ceremony beside the Herbert Hoover Library. They wore varied attire and held American flags while reflecting on their journeys to citizenship. Edwin Turcios and Yvette Irakoze spoke of disbelief and joy in Cedar Rapids and Coralville.

Linn County school board reelects Barkley president Law vice president

The Linn County School Board elected Dan Barkley as president and David Law as vice president by acclamation on Monday night. Law succeeds Bill Huntoon who did not seek re-election. The board will generally hold work sessions at 4 30 p m and meetings at 7 p m on the second and fourth Mondays respectively with five exceptions.

Englert Theatre in Iowa City marks 100th anniversary celebration

Englert Theatre at 221 E. Public Space One launches Iowa City Community Supported Art season two

Public Space One kicks off ICCSA season two with an Oct 7 event at 7 p.m. at Trumpet Blossom Cafe. Shares cost 350 dollars, limited to 15, with six artworks per share and 500 dollars to each artist for exclusive edition pieces. Elkader considers loan for turkey river recreation area

The Elkader City Council approved a grant anticipation loan not to exceed 650000 to fund a white water recreation area on the Turkey River. It covers shelters river access parking and a southwest side performance area as part of a flood buyout zone from 2008. City Administrator Jennifer Cowsert said the loan backs worst case needs and noted grants including a 330000 Main Street Iowa I JOBS grant and a 62000 RECAT grant. Interim financing aids cash flow so contractors are paid without waiting for reimbursements.

Auction set for former Clayton County Office Building

Clayton County will hold an auction on October 31 at 10:30 a.m. at the Board of Supervisors Office to sell the former Clayton County Office Building in Elkader. The three‑acre site includes about 16 000 square feet and the county may reject any bid.
