The first degree sexual abuse trial for Henry Parrish Jr., 30, of 1151 19th Ave SW, proceeds after police recovered evidence from his home supporting a 9 year old’s claim. The girl was taken to a hospital from her school last fall. Parrish remains jailed in Linn County.
Police say Kenneth R. Cantrell 44 is hospitalized after a head-on collision in the 2200 block of First Avenue SE. Cantrell will face three traffic charges once recovered. Gerie L. Molyneux 28 and Robert Molyneux 9 were in fair condition at St. Luke's Hospital. April Molyneux 12 was treated and released.
Firefighters rushed twice to the Red Boggess home two miles south of Grinnell. Fire started in the fireplace and spread to the attic with everyone escaping unharmed. The fire rekindled at 7 30 p m and crews from Grinnell and Kellogg remained on scene. Damages estimated as extensive though not yet listed.
Gerardo Q. Gonzalez, 23, of Postville, was convicted by an Allamakee County jury for the January 15 murder of Francisco Costila Castaniera. Sentencing, postponed due to Judge Lawrence Fautsch's absence, is set for October 2. The shooting occurred about 2 a.m. in Castaniera's downtown Postville apartment after earlier bar tensions.
The Eastern Iowa Airport plans to increase fall season charter flights from 13 to 21 to Las Vegas and add two aircraft for winter service. Funjet Vacations will also run charters to Cancun and Puerto Vallarta, boosting traffic and prompting temporary parking improvements on Wright Brothers Boulevard. FAA funding and new road work accompany a multi million dollar Phase II expansion to accommodate a longer cross wind runway. Local site visits exceed 146 thousand since October.
In York and Son Garage in Ladora, Wayne Benny York now 87 retains a lifelong love of cars. He bought the shop at 16 after his father Harry planned a blacksmith return. Benny married Rosemary 54 years ago and has run the garage for 25 years as La dora’s fine chief.
Anthony Flowers 47 surrendered after a stop on Interstate 29 near Sioux Falls. Authorities weigh prosecuting him for the Sept 18 Cedar Rapids United Security Savings robbery and the Aug 25 Sioux City Bank robbery. Federal prosecutors must decide whether to combine cases, with additional weapons and drug charges from the stop. Flowers previously served 15 years for a 1985 Lindale Mall bank robbery.
Justin C. Reschly a 20 year old University of Iowa student was found unresponsive in Slater Residence Hall with officials awaiting lab results to determine cause of death. No foul play is suspected. The four sport athlete from Wayland had transferred from Southwest State and hoped to walk on to the Hawkeye basketball team.
