Sabotage Suspected in Danish Ferry Fire

Danish police and shipping officials suspect arson when a blaze broke out early Monday on the 600 foot Tor Scandinavia ferry in the North Sea en route from Goteborg to Harwich. Two Swedish passengers were killed and as many as 50 injured as the ship diverted to Esbjerg.

Interstate rest stops may get vending machines on I 80

The Iowa Department of Transportation will test vending machines at two rest stops on Interstate 80 west of Des Moines in partnership with the Iowa Commission for the Blind. Profits go to the commission while IDsOD takes a small administrative cut. Public reaction is expected to be mostly favorable.

Use of state parks jumps as fees end

Visitors and campers at Iowa state parks rose after the $5 annual park fee was removed. Statewide summer visitation reached 6.3 million, up 15 percent, with camping up 7 percent and lodge, cabin, and group cabin use also rising. drought limited gains, and final totals may rise after Labor Day. The DNR has completed about half of a park system reorganization, with more held by a moratorium.

Defiant mom freed in DC custody contempt case

Dr Elizabeth Morgan walked from a Washington jail in an orange jumpsuit after being jailed for more than two years for denying visitations with her daughter's father. The release followed a new Congress Bush law limiting civil contempt in DC to 12 months, expiring in 18 months. Morgan, 41, thanked supporters and God as she left with her lawyer.
