Investing Iowa funds in state banks would cost billions
Iowa Treasurer Maurice Baringer warned that putting state money entirely in Iowa banks would cost taxpayers about 12 million dollars annually by cutting access to the national money markets where short term rates soar to 8 to 84 percent. He argued keeping funds in Iowa banks would reduce earnings and raise taxes, challenging opponent Krause to propose offset plans. Local governments would also lose earnings if the state returns to the pre 1959 system.
