Amana Colonies land control at center of trial
Don Shoup general manager of the Amana Society testifies about the board’s authority over land use and life within the Amana Colonies. The case targets defendants operating businesses without permits or beyond authority, including Village Winery Old Wine Cellar Kitchen Sink Gift Shop and Colony Inn Inc. The 1860 Society formed on 25 000 acres imposed strict controls including where people live and work, with reorganizing in 1932 allowing private land ownership while preserving core controls through a reversionary stock plan for descendants and ongoing board oversight.

Linn County Population Forecast Scaled Down
The Linn County population forecast for 2000 has been trimmed by the regional planning commission to 180 374 from earlier projections and cites slower industrial growth. The last census figure posted 163 213. A 1990 estimate had projected 237 500, based on two decades of rapid growth. The panel authorized staff to attempt termination of a contract with Minneapolis firm R Dixon Speas, whose five year airport study drew criticism. The study suggested Cedar Rapids keep its airport, Iowa City expand or relocate, and a new general aviation airport be built in northern Linn County. The commission also reviewed local air quality with EPA deadlines for dust and ozone reductions, now pushed to January next year.
