Gusting winds fanned flames across roofs in the Chatsworth section of Los Angeles late Friday. Two out-of-control brush fires damaged or destroyed several hundred houses, with many losses in the $50,000 and up class. The second blaze swept through the Malibu canyon near the ocean.
A Friday evening crash on the Dane Dairy road about two miles south of Iowa City left two people injured. Michael Waller, 20, of Iowa City, remained in fair condition at University Hospitals Iowa City. a second man was treated and released, and a third was not injured.

Clinton County attorney Lawrence Carsten sen, resigning to become Iowa s first ombudsman, subpoenas friends, business associates, and members of the press to attend his farewell party. G Willey Pillers III will replace him, appointed by the county board of supervisors.
