Orchestra Iowa chief financial officer Kelley Cole helped pack up property at the Paramount Theatre in Cedar Rapids and said she cannot believe the city faces another major flood. The theater was damaged in the 2008 flooding.
City officials warn the Cedar River may crest near 25.3 feet on Monday. Miles of HESCO barriers, earthen levees, berms, dams, and sandbags are being erected in low lying areas to shield the east and west sides up to 26 feet, as officials say the event is probable but the city is prepared.
The Cedar River level stood at about 9.5 feet Friday evening and is forecast to reach 16 feet. Gov. Branstad declared an emergency for 13 counties as NewBo and Time Check neighborhoods prepare. The Czech Village has faced flooding before and the Flood Center is activated with plans in motion.
Residents north of Cedar Rapids brace for record rise as Cedar River nears 23 feet by Sunday. Crews shield the municipal electric plant with two layers of HESCO barriers while fire crews and volunteers guard Vinton. Kirkwood Community College moves furniture and equipment away from its Benton Center building.
The Cedar River is expected to crest at 25.3 feet Monday evening with probable flooding. City officials hold daily 10 a.m. news conferences at the Cedar Rapids Ice Arena and provide an interactive flooding map, parking at Westdale Mall and Ladd Library, sandbag stations, and 2-1-1 emergency contacts.
