Higher nurse education linked to lower hospital death rates
A study of 168 Pennsylvania hospitals found surgical patients faced nearly double the death rate where fewer nurses held bachelor's degrees. Lead author Linda Aiken said four year degrees improve care, as more educated staff correlate with better critical thinking and outcomes. Hospitals with less than 10 percent bachelor prepared nurses had about 3 percent death rates vs 1.5 percent where over 70 percent were bachelor prepared.
