Gazette reports show many schools and law enforcement offices in Iowa deny public information despite state law. Clerks sheriffs and police officials commonly refuse or delay access to records while many superintendents ignore requests.
The statewide study finds access denials across departments for concealed weapons permits 58 percent and police incident reports 42 percent in major cities. City and county records show 9 and 2 percent refusals respectively, while property tax bills remained publicly available and school contract data were largely ignored by districts.
Olympic wrestler Terry Brands retired a year ago after chronic pain and near blackouts ended his dominance. He quit briefly, then returned convinced the pain had faded. Now 32, he states he felt overtrained and ready to compete again under coach Dan Gable.
President Clinton released 400 million to LIHEAP emergency energy assistance and ordered federal agencies to buy heating oil now to curb price spikes. New York leads beneficiaries with about 55 million, followed by Illinois Michigan Ohio and Pennsylvania each over 20 million.
