Iowa governor warns state revenue may cut worker pay raises
Gov. Robert Ray warned Iowa may lack funds for state worker pay raises next year if tax collections remain weak. He noted inflation has fallen, revenues are down, and the state will review money available and needs before deciding on any increases. The treasury has run near empty for two years, with revenues $77 million below projections, yet no furloughs planned. The administration plans contract talks with AFSCME as it pursues cost-saving steps to avoid a deficit. Ray also defended a proposed 6 percent tuition hike for Iowa's three state universities, arguing students already pay under 30 percent of education costs and smaller, gradual increases are easier to handle.
