The justice department is re viewing senate hearing transcripts on the Bert Lance affair to check out a lot of things. Officials would not say if they are looking for indications of perjury during the government affairs committee hearings into Lance's personal financial affairs.
The French call the Carter administration’s demand that future Concorde jets meet subsonic noise limits inadmissible and grave. The move could allow continued Concorde service to the United States, while British co manufacturers express delight and hope for potential profitability.
A federal grand jury in Philadelphia indicted Senator Henry Cianfiani on 110 counts including racketeering mail fraud obstruction of justice and income tax evasion. He faces up to 565 years in prison and 186000 in fines if convicted on all counts. The charges allege he placed two women in no work jobs on the state senate appropriations committee payroll where he was chairman. The House approved tougher felony penalties for doctors and health providers defrauding Medicare and Medicaid by 362 to 5 and sent the bill to the Senate. It would raise penalties to up to 25 000 dollars and five years imprisonment, reclassify most provider fraud as felonies, and retain misdemeanor charges for recipients.
No Cedar Rapids elementary classes Friday yet kids still played on Erskine school grounds. Joe Joe Turner five and Deidre Rodriguez seven built castle structures with sand as rains fell in the morning and again in the afternoon. Joe Joe is the son of Joseph Turner and family at 3620 Mt. Secretary of State Cyrus Vance and Soviet Foreign Minister Andrei Gromyko concluded two days of discussions at the White House and State Department and said progress was made toward a new strategic arms pact. They noted no SALT II agreement yet and discussed a possible Carter Brezhnev summit.
Thunderstorms lashed much of Iowa with heavy rain and hail. A brief tornado touched down north of Aurelia in Cherokee County, with no damage reported. Winds over 40 mph ripped the roof from a Lakewood house near Des Moines airport. no injuries. At Independence, lightning likely caused a blackout at People's Memorial Hospital.
Police were called to Hilltop trailer court after a man with a shotgun barricaded inside a trailer. Three children were believed inside as at least one shotgun blast was reported. By 1 a.m. federal agents and multiple law enforcement agencies assisted while officials released details only after the incident concluded.
After a week of contention the Linn-Mar School Board approved the Mount Mercy College student teaching contract at a Friday special meeting with five votes in favor. Dr. Larry Wogan abstained and Margery Scheie was late to vote as the panel also authorized a contract with Northeast Missouri State University in Kirksville. Dr. Travis Houser of Mount Mercy praised the board’s action noting the longstanding good relationship between the district and the college.
Linn-Mar board member Dr. Larry Wogahn criticized Mount Mercy teaching practices during a Monday meeting over a contract renewal and tenure denial affecting his wife. He suggested awaiting new college policies under president Dr. Thomas Feld, while fellow members urged adherence to AAUP tenure guidelines. Wogahn did not elaborates on his remarks when contacted.

Pentagon officials avoided confirmation while sources note ongoing work mirrors Ford era plans and Soviet tests.
