Washington sources say five of eight chronic disease units will be shut or scaled back under new federal budget limits. Programs covering cancer, heart and stroke, diabetes, arthritis and respiratory diseases face drastic reductions, risking staff cuts and shifts to other divisions. Kennedy and other lawmakers condemn the move as harming medical schools, universities, and community health work nationwide.
