Wickard Urges Overalls for Farm Hands in World War II Drive
Secretary of Agriculture Wickard urged farm workers to seek deferment under the selective service act so they can stay in the fields. He argued most farmers sons and hired men serve best in overalls rather than khaki uniforms to help Britain and fight Nazism. He cited pledges of food aid to Britain through June 30 and warned production goals will be hard as younger men leave farms for defense jobs.
