Tobacco farming by Iowa’s McGregor five acre field
The Elmer Pullen and Maurice Price operation near McGregor grows tobacco in a single five acre plot, an unusual Iowa crop. Harvest began in September and will last about two weeks, with hand cutting and spearing to hang on laths, then drying in a central shed. Pullen notes soil and wind affect quality, saying Wisconsin soils suit tobacco and yields have ranged from 250 to 600 dollars per acre.
