Richard Lorber edged Gov. Philip Noel by 100 votes to win Rhode Island Democratic senatorial nomination with 60,118 to 60,018 after an eight day recount. Lorber said he is nearly broke for the general election against Republican John Chafee amid irregularities questions.
President Ford signed a bill to boost Veterans Administration aid to state veterans homes. The per diem payments for hospital care rise to $11.50, nursing home care to $10.50, and home care to $5.50, retroactive to 1976, with states facing higher operating costs.
