A Tough Old Goat and $1 Million By Wayne Ramders

TOWA CITY Pretty excit- MET on the xthe You a goat-which I am-or you get very discouraged. The world doesn't love you-for sure the world's money. Paul Engle, poet, Rhodes scholar, founder of the writers workshop at the University of The Gazette continues a series on the international writing program IWP. A Ford Foundation grant of $100,000 marked one million dollars in cajoling and funding. Engle built a global program drawing 116 writers from almost 50 countries, mainly Asia, Latin America and East Europe, funded by sponsors like John Deere and Sears. The program costs about $160,000 yearly and pays each writer about $500 monthly, with around $6,000 per writer per year for living and travel. Engagements include notable authors from Argentina, Japan, and Poland earning prizes, while Engle notes the program is expensive but essential to produce writers with focused leisure and international perspective.
