The ACLU of Iowa filed a suit Thursday challenging the Iowa Department of Human Services ban on Medicaid covering gender reassignment surgery, arguing medical groups now back such care. The state still treats the procedure as cosmetic, excluding it from coverage for nearly 600,000 low income residents.
ACLU of Iowa sues on behalf of Eerie Anna Good and Carol Ann Beal challenging Medicaid denial of gender affirming surgery as discrimination under Iowa Civil Rights Act and equal protection. The Iowa Public Information Board voted 7-2 to withhold an audio recording of a closed session while the state ombudsman probes possible open meetings law violations. The dispute centers on whether reviewing the tape is needed to determine if a violation occurred. The ombudsman may still proceed with findings without the recording.
