Budget cut delays filling corrections staff jobs in 6th District
The 6th Judicial District Department of Correctional Services will delay filling budgeted vacancies as it trims 27 313 to meet a state mandate. Executive Director Lary Nelson said two clerical posts will wait until early next year and other vacancies will stay open 30 days. He warned of further cuts.

Springer Defense Claims He Avoided Fatal Fight
Marion man John Springer testified in Linn District Court that he did not start the February 25 incident causing Michael Stastny’s death and did everything to avoid it. He admitted punching Stastny after being grabbed, saying Stastny struck first, and he feared injury if the fight continued. The trial, over involuntary manslaughter, proceeds after closing arguments.
