Iowa Court of Appeals affirms jury finding that an act of God allowed the Novak cattle to stray into a neighbor’s corn in 1976. The Linn County jury had concluded the fence collapse by a fallen tree limb was an extraordinary natural event, given dry ground, deep tracks, and recent rain.

Iowa Court Upholds Escape Conviction While Reversing Conspiracy
The Iowa Court of Appeals upheld the escape conviction of a state penitentiary inmate who never left the prison but reversed Mark Bugely’s conviction and three year sentence for conspiracy to escape, finding the state failed to prove the conspiracy charge. The ruling said leaving a place without due authority satisfies escape, but conspiracy could not be proven. In a separate Fort Madison proceeding, former deputy Henry Farber testified that mileage fees were split with Scott County Sheriff Ken Paulsen, with prosecutors alleging Paulsen gained about fifty one thousand dollars from 1973 to 1977 through the plan.
