Tax Exemption For Unprofitable Railroads Urged
DES MOINES AP sharemen of the Iowa commerce commission urged the state to exempt from property tax railroad lines that fail to generate enough revenue to be profitable. Maurice Van Nostrand told the Legislature’s railroad service study committee that taxing all miles equally pressures abandonment of lines. He noted main lines versus loss making branches and urged exempting lines with 34 cars or fewer per mile per year. The Iowa Association of Railroads said railroads will cooperate to develop transportation systems.
