Cedar Rapids to take over seven private lift stations
The Cedar Rapids City Council Infra structure Committee approved a voluntary plan to transfer seven privately owned sanitary sewer lift stations to city ownership. Homeowners would pay a 40 percent rise in monthly sewer bills for ten years to fund upgrades, totaling about 8 to 10 dollars more per month in affected developments. The stations serve 462 homes across College Farms Hoover Trail and Prairie housing areas and will be taken over to align operations with city standards.

Iowa Eyes Common Core Tests For Statewide Use
Iowa moves toward adopting the Smarter Balanced assessments replacing the Iowa Tests of Basic Skills. A state task force recommended the change in December and the board voted to proceed with an administrative review and public comment process that could last up to 180 days. A public hearing is set for November 3 with written comments accepted beforehand. The tests cover third through eighth and 11th grades. Cedar Rapids Fire Department responded to a Sunday morning Menards fire at 2800 Wiley Boulevard SW. Crews attacked heavy smoke from the rear, found the source, and extinguished it. Two employees were onsite and unharmed. The fire is under investigation and damage extent is unclear. Menards was to reopen today according to the store's general manager.
